Independence Day brings back the times I spent on the streets, carrying a placard, and trying like hell to cover my face. As if the media would care who I was. Haha. Another memory is of me toting a camera, trying to capture the flags, the sweaty faces, and the restless energy activists emit on camera.
I miss those days. Joining the rally, there’s always one during independence day, is for me a fitting way to commemorate June 12. Saying happy independence day sounds ridiculous, like a donkey pretending to be a gift horse. Free from the spaniards maybe but not from the hands of the Americans and from the likes of Gloria Arroyo and her cronies at the house of Congress.
I’d love to see a Philippines with a government that is truly for the people. We hear of the conass and I see that dream blurring, but I see and read of people campaigning against it online and offline and I feel hope flutter in me. I didn’t get to join the gathering along Ayala Ave. yesterday but my heart is with them.
On a happier note, google joins us Pinoys in commemorating the Independence Day with a doodle.
